Since you dont know what you have I cant tell you what to do as to the resister. Do this with all of the wires to the coil disconnected. I would check you battery, bulbs, voltage regulator can damage your electrical by mixing and matching voltage parts. Cheap meters many times will not show 0 when the leads are touched together. Does the coil and starter have to be 12 v or will it run with 6 v equipment. This is what I have found so far after searching the NAPA PartsPro Search Engine..
